Cape Cod was a rural community in the late 1800’s. However, sea captains were familiar with many ports and harbors, and thus were well traveled. Wellfleet and South Wellfleet offered a sound educational background, and a Protestant religious background. If you lived in South Wellfleet during this time of change, you would have been familiar with the railroad schedule, women welcomed it as a way to travel beyond their communities, while city folk arrived by rail in the summer.
